OK, this scenario was presented to the kids in one of Calob's classes today. We discussed it when he got home but I'm curious as to what YOU would do.

You're flying on a plane towards the Bahamas when your plane is struck by lightning. You crash in the water and swim to a nearby island. There are 5 of you, including the pilot. The waters are shark-infested so you only have the opportunity to salvage 5 items from the wreckage before the sharks eat you. What 5 items do you choose & more importantly ... WHY?!?!?

- 200 ft of 20 lb fishing line
- flashlight
- first aid kit
- 1 liter of water
- jar of peanuts

I would take: the pocket knife, 2 wool blankets, fishing line, litre of water and the compact mirror.
Knife over gun because the ammo would only last so long, wool blankies to stay warm, fishing line for food, water to keep me going initially and the mirror over the matches because the matches would run out and for signals.
I would take the knife for cutting branches and cleaning fish.The 2 blakets for warmth or shade.The fishing line for fishing and to tie wood together to make a raft.A mirror to start fires and signal planes.The gun and ammo for protection from wild aninmals and get rid of the rest of you so I didn't have to share!!!

My thoughts are since this flight is on its way to its destination a rescue team should be not far off...since most people are rescued and such...so, that being said that the rescue team is coming...I would choose:
*Mirror -needed for signaling/fires and such
*water - essential for survival
*blankets -warmth/shelter
*fishing twine -for tying stuff and maybe even to catch fish (I hope that someone who can catch a fish is with me)
*Knife -to cut stuff...
I didn't choose the gun b/c I have one already in my ankle holster - they missed it at the airport...I don't know how I got through security! :)
~ Gun and Ammo so I could get meat
~ Pocket Knife so I could cut wood and other stuff
~ Compact Miror so I could make fire
~ 2 Wool Blankets so I could keep warm
~ Fish Line so I could fish
I would take the fishing line, knife, water, wool blanket and matches (Assumiong they are in a water proof container-elsewise I would take the gun to start fires with).
The fishing line is the most valuable as is the water. They will provide food and water immediately. The matches provide fire which once lit would try not to let go out. The wool blankets would keep me warm.
The last comment was from Troy. And Troy has informed me that I can't start a fire with a mirror (darn him), however my selections would stay the same. I would have some boy start a fire by rubbing the sticks together (remember Cast Away?)...someone should know how to do that! :)
I will do what the Diet Goddess said....sounds like the perfect plan! ;)
