9th Place Finish!!!

Calob finished with 3.5 points &
took 9th place ...
CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!

I don't have any pictures from the tourney as they're still down in Seattle & won't be home for hours. I'm posting an old picture of Calob at the state tourney in 2nd grade (I think) ... he finished 15th in this one. ☺

High School State Chess Tournament

Calob is competing in his first (sort of)
chess tournament as a high schooler.
He has competed as part of a team
but not individually.
This is a big step ...
I'm thinking the competitors are
going to be bigger & better.
.......... .......... ..........
Good luck to Calob!!!

Another Saturday ...

Today was a busy day for our family (except for me, of course). Callie had D.I., Calob had a chess tournament & Terence (and Gord) had D.I. appraiser training. I, on the other hand, had no plans. Lovely. In the end though, Sharon, Katie & I had lunch, watched Emily play a basketball game & did a wee bit of shopping. Overall it was a good day for our family.

Calob finished 8th overall (7th-12th grade division) out of 40+ kids today. He isn't satisfied with his results. In fact, he's still pretty upset about the first game (which he lost). The boy had a rating quite a bit lower than Calob's but as Calob says "he played masterfully" (the other boy, that is) ... and that's saying something. Calob lost the first & last game ... with 3 wins in between. Not his best finish but pretty good, especially considering he was competing in an older grade division this time.

Here he is with his trophy Nalu - just because he's cute

Calob the Chess CHAMP!

Calob took 1st place at a chess tournament today ... yay Calob! He hasn't taken 1st place in many years so this was a SUPER big deal. Calob called after each round (as he always does ... love it) to give me a brief synopsis of what happened, talk about any mistakes he or his opponent made, etc. I always look forward to the phone calls. Today, after each game he won, the excitement slowly grew. He doesn't compete nearly as often as he used to so I was a little out of practice with my "chess pep talk" but I did my best. Once he called to let me know he won his 4th game I knew that Callie & I had to go for a little bit (she had a ballet rehearsal soon) so we headed to the school. We caught him right before the 5th round and stayed until he finished his game. We are SO proud of him as it can be frustrating to try at something for so long but never come home with the victory.
Today he did ... yippeeeee!!!

Getting his trophy ...
pretty small but 1st place none-the-less
